Joseph R. Herkert

Biographical Sketch for the Online Ethics Center


Joseph R. Herkert is Associate Professor of Science, Technology, and Society (STS) at North Carolina State University where he is Director of the STS Program, Director of the Benjamin Franklin Scholars dual-degree program in engineering and humanities/social sciences, and teaches engineering ethics and STS courses. Dr. Herkert works primarily in the field of engineering ethics, with particular focus on macroethical problems and issues.

He is editor of Social, Ethical and Policy Implications of Engineering: Selected Readings (Wiley/IEEE Press, 2000) and has published numerous articles on engineering ethics and computing ethics in engineering, law, social science, and applied ethics journals. He is a frequent speaker on engineering ethics at academic conferences and professional meetings. Herkert is a past-president of the IEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology and the current editor of IEEE Technology and Society Magazine. He is also a registered Professional Engineer with more than five years experience in the power industry.

Herkert received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Southern Methodist University and a doctorate in Engineering and Policy from Washington University in St. Louis.
