Biographical Sketch for the Online Ethics Center

Elysa R. Koppelman-White is an assistant professor of philosophy at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. She has a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Iowa (1999), M.A. in bioethics from Case Western Reserve University (2000), M.A. in philosophy from Cleveland State University (1994), and B.A. in philosophy from The University of Wisconsin, Madison (1992).

Her interests are in ethical theory, bioethics, professional ethics, research ethics, personal identity, and contemporary Jewish philosophy. She has served as a consultant in research ethics for the Online Center for Ethics in Engineering and Science and has created a series of online courses in the responsible conduct of research for The Cleveland Clinic Foundation. She serves on the ethics committee and IRB of Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital. Her publications "Dementia and Dignity: Towards a Better Method of Surrogate Decision-Making" which is published in the Journal of Medicine and Philosophy, "The State of Nature, Contracts, and Opting Out" (a commentary on a paper written about ethical issues in genetic testing) in the American Journal of Bioethics, and “The Dead Donor Rule and the Concept of Death: Severing the Ties that Bind Them,” target article in American Journal of Bioethics. Her current projects focus on the role autonomy plays (or should play) in resolving ethical issues in the health care or research setting.
