III Professional Development

The professional employee and the employer have responsibilities for professional development - the employee to establish goals and take the initiative to reach them and the employer to provide a supportive attitude and environment.

Professional Employee

1. The professional employee should maintain technical competence through a program of continuing education and broadening experience.

2. The professional employee should belong to and participate in the activities of appropriate societies in order to obtain additional knowledge and experience. Such participation should include the preparation of professional and technical papers for publication and presentation.

3. The professional employee should achieve appropriate registration and/or certification as soon as eligible.

4. The professional employee should provide public service by participating in civic and political activities of a technical and nontechnical nature. If such participation interferes with the timely execution of work, it should be with the agreement of the employer.

Employer

1. The employer should cooperate with the employee to maintain technical competence and broaden experience. Included are appropriate work assignments of a rotational nature, and support of continuing education by self-improvement, courses in-house and at institutions of higher learning, and meetings and seminars on appropriate subjects. Also included are encouragement and support of membership and participation in professional society activities.

2. The employer should consider compensated leaves of absence for professional study to improve competence and knowledge.

3. Consistent with employer objectives, employees should be given every opportunity to publish work promptly and to present findings at technical society meetings.

4. The employer should encourage and assist professional employees to achieve registration and/or certification in their respective fields.
