Codes from Student Organizations
- Student Pugwash USA
- The mission of Student Pugwash USA is to promote the
socially responsible application of science and technology
in the 21st century. As a student organization, Student
Pugwash USA encourages young people to examine the ethical,
social, and global implications of science and technology,
and to make these concerns a guiding focus of their
academic and professional endeavors. Student Pugwash USA
offers educational programs that are interdisciplinary,
inter generational, and international in scope, reflecting
a belief that all citizens share a responsibility to ensure
that science and technology are utilized for the benefit of
humankind. Student Pugwash USA is guided by a respect for
diverse perspectives and, as such, does not adopt advocacy
positions on substantive issues.
- Student Pugwash USA
Pledge
- Written by a student, a postdoctoral Mechanical
Engineering fellow at the University of California at
Berkley, the Student Pugwash USA pledge favorably passed
the review of the Senior Committee. The language of the
pledge is a compromise. Originally, the chapter proposed
using the SPUSA pledge given on cards which were carried to
Oslo for the autumn 1995 Nobel Peace Prize ceremonies.
- Pugwash Conferences on Science and World
Affairs
- The purpose of the Pugwash Conferences is to bring
together, from around the world, influential scholars and
public figures concerned with reducing the danger of armed
conflict and seeking cooperative solutions for global
problems. Meeting in private as individuals, rather than as
representatives of governments or institutions, Pugwash
participants exchange views and explore alternative
approaches to arms control and tension reduction with a
combination of candor, continuity, and flexibility seldom
attained in official East-West and North-South discussions
and negotiations. Yet, because of the stature of many of
the Pugwash participants in their own countries (as, for
example, science and arms-control advisers to governments,
key figures in academies of science and universities, and
former and future holders of high government office),
insights from Pugwash discussions tend to penetrate quickly
to the appropriate levels of official policy-making.
- A PLEDGE, an
OATH, and a MODEL for a CODE
- The idea of taking a pledge or oath has been discussed
often in professional circles. Some argue that publicizing
a pledge or oath at least raises awareness to social
implications, even if the pledge or oath itself is not
taken seriously. Two relatively recent examples, drawn from
several, are given here: The Humboldt Pledge and the
Hippocratic Oath for Scientists, Engineers, and Executives.
- Pledge of Ethical Conduct for
Engineers
- A Pledge of Ethical Conduct was printed in Commencement
program for College of Engineering at the University of
California, Berkeley, in both May 1997 and May 1998.
Berkeley has some hopes of making it a tradition.
We would like to list codes of other engineering and
science societies. If your society would like to have an
ethical code or set of guidelines included here, please send
it to us electronically with permission to include it.
