Materials for Instruction in Science and Engineering Ethics at the Secondary Level
Ethics and Values in Pre-College Science Instruction
- Ethics and Values in Pre-College Science Instruction
- An Instructional Guide for Secondary School Science Teachers With Model Lessons for Classroom Use by Michael Pritchard and Theodore Goldfarb.NOTE: This contribution appears as a featured resource in the online and printed issues of ENC Focus: A Magazine for Classroom Innovators Vol. 8 no.3, published by the Eisenhower National Clearinghouse for Mathematics and Science Education -ENC.
Studies about Children's Ethics
- How Children and Adolescents Relate to Nature
- Patricia Nevers, University of Hamburg, Department of Education: A study of how children react to nature, natural objects, and the environment. Focuses on how children react to ethical conflicts about the local environment
- Reasonable Children: Science Teachers as Moral Educators
- Michael S. Pritchard, Department of Philosophy, and Center for the Study of Ethics in Society Western Michigan University. There is a form of critical thinking that includes moral and scientific thought. Children of school age are capable of this thought, and curricula should be constructed to encourage it. To do this, science teachers must include ethical issues in their lessons

Educational Resources For Students In Grades K-12
These links will open in a new browser.
- Online Bioethics Course
- Iowa State University. Online bioethics course for classroom and extension educators. Ethical theory, bioethics pedagogy, and a focus on biotechnology.
- Women in Engineering Programs & Advocates Network
- Hands on activities to introduce students in grades 3 - 12 to Engineering.
- Research Ethics
- Suggested activities for teaching Research Ethics to students grades 9-12 complete with 3 laboratory exercises
- Ethical and Legal and Social Issues in Science
- Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory's ELSI in Science program is a pilot project designed to stimulate discussions on the implications of selected areas of scientific research. These modules probably will be most useful to educators and students at the middle school level. However, older students may benefit from some of the information as well. The list of topics include:
- Basic and Applied Research
- Breast Cancer Screening
- Indoor and Outdoor Pollution
- Genetic Patients and Intellectual Property
- Personal Privacy and Medical Databases
- Sustainable Development
- Access Excellence
- A site for health and bioscience teachers and learners, originally developed by Genentech, Inc. This site contains teaching resources, activities exchange, and ongoing discussions.
Recommendations of other Web courses or materials on engineering ethics are most welcome. Cases not already on the web may be sent for inclusion in The Online Ethics Center. These will be subject to editing, if posted. Because the focus of this center is ethics (including policy questions addressed by engineers and scientists) we list only courses in engineering and science ethics. Although courses in the History of Technology or on Technology and Society are not included, we welcome historical cases that raise ethical issues for engineers and scientists.
